The Underdog

As some of you might know, the Seattle Seahawks are the first NFL team to ever reach the playoffs with a sub-.500 record.  They finished their season with a 7-9 record, defeating the Rams in the final game.

With 2:58 remaining, the Seahawks are winning by 11 points over the defending champions, the New Orleans Saints.  All week, people were doubting this Seahawks team in the media.  Admittedly, I am not a Seahawks fan and I realize the game is not even finished as I type this blog.  I even viewed the team from Seattle as an enemy during their time in the Chief's division.

For whatever reason, we generally like to root for the underdogs.  Their disadvantage is noticeable in most cases.  The underdog is outmatched, but relies on intelligence, coaching, and talent to defeat the favorite.  I'm proud of the Seahawks, but the point of this blog is to question why we fight for the dark horse.

Most of us have all had those difficult times in our life when we doubted our abilities.  Yet, we persevere through those rough patches and we are stronger people for it.  In the example of sports, the underdog must overcome odds to win.   The underdog is expected to fail.  Experts who have analyzed each team thoroughly say the underdog will lose, therefore it must put forward more effort than the favorite to be the victor.

It seems that the underdog has a disadvantage from the outset.  Whether it be small payroll, talent disparity, or a high number of injuries, if a factor puts one team at a disadvantage, then humans tend to root for that team.

Update: The Seahawks have defeated the Saints by the score of 41-36.  The Jets- Colts game is up next.
