Current Events Recap

1. Canada's Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon urges Iran to improve the country's human rights record and denounces Iran for imposing "draconian death sentences and unfair jail terms" while expressing particular concern for the fate of two Canadians of dual nationality imprisoned in Iran.  

2. Dilma Rousseff is sworn in as Brazil's first female President.  

3. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announces that, due to the late passage of the extension of the Bush tax cuts and other itemizations, up to 50 million Americans will not be able to file their 2010 tax returns until mid-February.  

4. President Obama signs the 9/11 health bill into law to cover the cost of medical care for rescue workers and others sickened by toxic fumes and dust after the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.  

5. Hundreds of Egyptians Christians protest in Alexandria and Cairo and shout slogans against Hosni Mubarak's rule following a church bombing.  Egyptian media warns of civil war and increasing sectarian violence between Christians and Muslims.  Pope Benedict XVI publicly condemns the bombing.  

6. Investments in Facebook totaling $500 million lead to speculation that its value could be as high as $50 billion.  

7. A study reports that 61% of Americans believe the best way to solve the budget deficit is to raise taxes for the wealthiest, in contrast to a plan by Republicans to extend Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.  

8. 10 year old Canadian Kathryn Gray becomes the youngest person ever to discover a supernova.  

9. The 112th United States Congress is convened.  Republican representative John Boehner of Ohio is elected Speaker of the House of Representatives, succeeding Democrat Nancy Pelosi of California.  

10. The United States plans to send another 1,400 marines to Afghanistan, where approximately 100,000 U.S. troops are already engaged in the War in Afghanistan.
