1. Executives of the troubled U.S. book retailer Borders meet with publishers to appeal for financing.

2. Standard and Poor's and Moody's warn the United States that its increasing national debt may lead to a lowering of the nation's credit rating.

3. The Taliban abandons its opposition to female education in Afghanistan due to a "cultural change".

4. Amnesty International criticizes the British government for spending nearly 1 billion pounds on 30 unmanned aerial vehicles which Israel's military allegedly "field-tested on Palestinians" during the Gaza War.

5. Online encyclopedia Wikipedia celebrates the tenth anniversary of its founding.

6. The New York Times reports that U.S. and Israeli intelligence services collaborated in the development of the destructive computer worm Stuxnet to record Iranian operations and send them spinning out of control.  Testing is reported to have occurred the Dimona Complex in Israel.

7. The Social Network wins Best Motion Picture- Drama, while Colin Firth and Natalie Portman win Best Actor and Best Actress- Drama at the 68th Golden Globe Awards.

8. Apple reports record profits of $6 billion as consumers purchased more of it's products than market estimates suggested.

9. Chinese President Hu Jintao begins a four day state visit to the United States.

10. Senators Kent Conrad from North Dakota and Joe Lieberman from Connecticut announced they will not seek re-election in 2012.

11. Prosecutors in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania charge a Philadelphia illegal abortionist with eight counts of murder for killing a patient and seven live born babies.

12. The Economist publishes an article regarding the disparity of wealth between the rich and the rest.
