A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists promoting pseudoscience. One of his assumptions was that doomsayers spread fear of many things in our environment. In his project, he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict governmental control or total elimination of the chemical “dihydrogen monoxide.”

-it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
-it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
The student then asked a sample of 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
-43 said yes
-6 were undecided
-1 knew the water and “dihydrogen monoxide” are one in the same
The title of his project was, “How Gullible Are We?”
