Current Events Recap

1. Giant media conglomerate News Corp. says it will launch a digital newspaper as content of Apple's IPad on February 2.

2. Unrest in Egypt continues as more than 1,000 people are arrested amid the protests against unemployment, police brutality, and President Mubarak's 30 year rule.  The Egyptian government announces a curfew for cities nationwide starting at 6 P.M. local time and running through 7 A.M.  President Mubarak calls on the government to step down but gives no indication that he will stand down.  Thousands of demonstrators converge on Egypt's Interior Ministry, one of the most visible signs of state authority in Egypt.  Police shoot at the demonstrators.  Protestors execute a "million-man march" on Mubarak's presidential palace in Cairo.  The United Nations believes as many as 300 people have been killed in the past ten days.

3. Chinese authorities offer no response to requests by jailed dissident and Nobel peace laureate Liu Xiaobo for family visits.

4. The United States National Weather Service issues a blizzard warning for nine states in the Midwest.  Chicago's Midway International Airport closes due to the snow.

5. The United States Senate votes down a repeal of the healthcare reforms 51-47.
