Exercise and the Brain

In school and throughout life, we are constantly told that exercise is good for our bodies.  But is it true that exercise can also benefit your brain?  “I like to say that exercise is like taking a little Prozac or a little Ritalin at just the right moment” says John J. Ratey MD, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
I’m not a scientist and I’m not particularly interested in what medical studies have discovered on the question.  I’ve found that if a study is conducted, you can prove any point under the sun.  There will generally be evidence for and against a position.  Think about this issue from a common sense perspective.  Working out cannot harm your mental performance in the long run, right?  Even though you might be tired after a workout, the next day, you feel great most of the time.  If you accept the premise that exercise makes for a healthier, higher functioning brain, then you are faced with a few choices.  First, do I exercise?  It is possible to exercise too much.  When deadlines are approaching, it might not be the best idea to hit the gym.  Second, what kind of exercise will optimize the functionality of my brain?  A game of tackle football without any kind of pads is dangerous.  There’s a higher chance of getting a concussion than there is of gaining any brainpower.
Here are five exercises that will improve brain functioning.
  1. Yoga
  2. Pilates
  3. Basketball
  4. Weight Lifting
  5. Running
